Maddie's 1 year check-up

I'm a little late on posting this, but Maddie had her 1 year well check-up on Thursday, July 30th. She weighed in at 22lbs 7 oz, and is 30.25" tall. That's 85th percentile for weight and 86th for height. Such a big and healthy girl!

She is still in size 3 diapers during the day but we've moved her up to size 4 at night. I'm thinking once we finish the size 3, I might just go to size 4 full time. She is in size 12 month clothes, but I've began to put some 18 month shirts on her. They're honestly a little too big, but at least she has room to grow into them! All of her fall clothes are size 18 months, so she has plenty of time to grow into them. Her shorts are still 6-9 months, but only if the leg openings are big enough to get around those thighs. If they aren't wide enough, then we have to go to 12 months (which gap in the waist).

She is now on all whole milk. We were giving her 3 eight ounce cups of milk each day, but since she's in the upper percentile we are cutting her back to 2 six ounce cups of milk. She loves her milk! When she's not drinking milk, she is drinking water. We are still not doing juice in our house, and hope to continue with that as along as possible. Along with cutting back on milk, we are cutting back on some food at meal times. I've been giving her too much to eat at meal time. She's only supposed to be getting 4 servings of food and her servings are the size of her fists. I'm getting better about measuring out her food before giving it to her. We used to just give her food as we were eating because it was the easiest thing and we were able to keep her happier that way, but now I'm making her a separate plate and feeding her off of that. She's just one of those kids that hold onto every calorie she consumes, so we are just trying to keep her from getting too big. There isn't anything wrong with her weight or size. I also think that now she's moving around so much, she will start to level out.

Speaking of moving, she is now walking 95% of the time. She still hasn't mastered standing up from the floor yet. When she does fall down, she will crawl to the nearest wall or object to pull up on and then walk from there. She started stepping between people on the 4th of July, in right field at the baseball stadium (only my kid, right?!). Then she would only take a few steps, maybe 5, between people. If she didn't have someone to walk to, she would refuse to walk or she would reach for my finger. She did this for 3 weeks. FINALLY, on the 24th (the day before her birthday party) she began to get a little braver. She would stand up on the couch and begin walking to see how far she could go. She could get pretty far. She could walk from her room into Connor's room, walk around the kitchen, and even down the hall. As the day went on, she got farther and farther. Then her birthday celebration happened and she was held most of the day, so she wasn't able to practice until later after everyone left. She was still walking down the hall. Ever since then, she's been a walking fool! It's so fun to hear her little footsteps down the hall.

Maddie now has 8 teeth!! The bottom two, top four, and two upper molars that broke through this past week. She honestly showed no sign of any teeth coming through. She may have had one day where her nap wasn't the full length, but she wasn't cranky or clingy. It totally surprised me to see and feel all of those teeth in there.

She has become quite the little girl this past year. She's usually always smiling and rarely meets a stranger these days. She likes to be included in all sorts of activities, and will make it known when she feels left out. You can tell how much she loves something by the way she gives hugs and kisses. She gives really good hugs (head on the shoulder and back pats included!) and loves to blow kisses. She loves purses, shoes, hairbows, and sunglasses. Every time I put her shoes on, she kicks her feet like she's showing off her shoes.

We took her to Smoke on the Water for her birthday and this was all the smile she would give me. She was waiting patiently for her food. She had beef brisket, chicken, mac n cheese, cornbread, and a deep fried loaded mashed potato ball (I forget the formal name).
